The story of Ribolla Gialla is wrapped in the scents of the Mediterranean. Borne by waves from the island of Cephalonia, the ribolla gialla grape found a home in the hills of Friuli. It was mentioned as long ago as the 12th century and praised by Ger-man chroniclers in the 14th. Ribolla Gialla wine has always had a special place in the viticulture of eastern Friuli, where it is part and parcel of the history of empires, peoples and places.

It is a complex variety, which requires particular conditions and care during both its cultivation and production. An international vineyard, in Friuli fi nds a rare place: sunny days and cool nights, a sea breeze and mineral soil along the soft hills allow it to best express the characteristics of this variety.
Castello di Buttrio Mon Blanc is a compendium of Friulian viticulture in a judiciously gauged blend of native grape varieties.
Friulano’s austere structure melds with the sun-kissed acidity of ribolla gialla and swathes itself in the full-bodied minerality of malvasia istriana. Mon Blanc brings together fruit-led elegance with fresh waft s of broom and all the aromas of its sun-drenched hillslope home.
Sauvignon Blanc is one of the world’s most unique grapes. Rich with fragrant treasures, it is an aromatic ecstasy of flowers, wild fennel, citrus and tropical fruit.
Its unmistakable aroma makes you love it immediately and the warm pleasantness has earned it a strong backing of admirers. The roots, infiltrating the tiny cracks of the land along the Buttrio hills, saturate themselves of a mineral supply of extraordinary character, and its charm vibrates of hints of honeysuckle and white peach.
Refosco has an ancient history. It was first documented in 1347 in the annals of the Municipality of Udine, where it is described, together with ribolla gialla, as one of the most highly prized and costly varieties. In fact, it would be more accurate to talk about a family of varieties, the refoscos.
At Castello di Buttrio, our refosco is the variety known as “dal peduncolo rosso” and takes its name from its distinctive purple-red peduncle, the bunchstem that attaches the cluster to the vine.
Refosco’s richly fruited wine is close-textured and full bodied with succulent layers of spice and earthiness. A wine whose chewy mouthfeel is braced by bright minerality.
The Merlot story in Friuli started towards the end of the 19th century when the variety found an ideal habitat in Friuli Venezia Giulia’s Hills.
It takes its name, which may refer to the blackbird, from the dark blue colour of its berries. Merlot’s clusters recall the blackbird’s plumage and blackbirds are also particularly fond of the vine’s thin-skinned berries. The nose unveils vibrant aromas of blueberry and raspberry-led berry fruits that lead into a fine-textured mouthfeel.
The result is a careful job of research, analysis and passion; it is an elegant wine with an incisive minerality, intense freshness and pleasant flavor.
Man’s labor embraces the climate and the area, giving maximum expression to this variety: a wide range of flowers and white-fleshed fruit blends into the refined, toasted traces and delicate citrus notes.
